Breakthrough in Water Conservation: How Drip Irrigation Opens New Horizons for Farmers in Nooken District
Osh Region — From May 20 to May 22, 2026, project experts Elvira Suvanova and Sherzod Abdurakhmanov successfully conducted a routine monitoring field visit for the “Early Onion” agricultural value chain scheme in Aral village, Nooken district. This vital initiative, dedicated to supporting local farmers, is actively implemented under the large-scale “Value Chain Agro Finance“ project.
While the value chain had previously faced certain challenges and irrigation water shortages, the project team found an excellent and timely solution to reboot the entire scheme. To breathe new life into production, the experts developed precise economic calculations and organized an engaging, inspiring Field Day for key partners—local farmers, representatives of local self-government (LSG), and the District Water Management Department (DWMD).
Key Positive Outcomes of the Field Event:
Compelling Economic Justification: A visual comparison between traditional methods and modern drip irrigation technologies revealed excellent prospects to the farmers and demonstrated the tangible financial benefits of transitioning to the new standards.
Revival of Optimism and Interest: The event served as a powerful catalyst for farmers and LSGs, restoring their confidence that onion production can remain stable and highly profitable even under conditions of severe irrigation water scarcity.
Scaling to the National Level: The data on water conservation and excellent yields collected during this successful pilot will form the basis of a solid presentation package for the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic. This will help lobby for and scale this advanced initiative at the national level.
Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) specialists proudly note that the project experts demonstrated high professionalism, responding swiftly to market demands and turning past challenges into new opportunities. The focus of the work now shifts to providing active and constructive support to key producers in the region who are ready to transition from theoretical calculations to the practical installation and efficient operation of drip irrigation systems on their fields.
