Growing together: Integrating farmers into value chains with sustainable finance

On 16 July 2026, experts from the Value Chain Agro Finance project conducted a field visit to Uzgen District to monitor grain fields and assess the results of applying No-till technology.

During the visit, project experts Elvira Suvanova and Sherzod Abdurahmanov visited farms in the villages of Karool and Kashka-Terek. The monitoring focused on crop conditions, harvesting progress, yields, economic results, and challenges faced by farmers during the season.

Yields Reached Up to 28 Centners per Hectare

The monitoring showed that most of the interviewed farmers were satisfied with the results of the current season. On successfully harvested No-till fields, wheat yields averaged between 20 and 28 centners per hectare.

In some farms, yields reached 26-28 centners per hectare. For example, one farmer in Kashka-Terek achieved an average yield of 28 centners per hectare on a 10-hectare field.

Farmers also generate additional income from hay. On some fields, approximately 100-150 hay bales were collected per hectare. At the time of the monitoring visit, the market price was around 120-130 KGS per bale.

Wheat prices ranged mainly from 20 to 22 KGS per kilogram, with prices reaching up to 25 KGS per kilogram in some cases.

Farmers’ Experience in Kashka-Terek

Farmers in Kashka-Terek highlighted the positive results of applying No-till technology under rainfed conditions. According to the farmers, they had not previously achieved such high yields under similar conditions.

Farmers identified reduced sowing costs as one of the advantages of the technology. They also highly appreciated the advisory support provided by the Jalal-Abad Rural Advisory Service.

Farmers particularly noted the effectiveness of recommendations on crop protection. With the support of specialists, they were able to address weed problems that had previously affected their fields.

At the time of the visit, several farms had already completed harvesting. For example, one 2.5-hectare field produced 70 centners of wheat, corresponding to a yield of 28 centners per hectare. Another 0.8-hectare field produced 21.5 centners, equivalent to approximately 26.8 centners per hectare.

At the same time, the village faced a serious challenge related to agricultural machinery. The only combine harvester available in the village had broken down, preventing several farmers from harvesting their mature wheat on time. Delays increased the risk of grain shattering and weight losses.

Farmers therefore expressed interest in the possibility of acquiring their own No-till seeder and combine harvester for the village. Project experts explained that, for the purchase of a seeder to be economically viable, the total area cultivated using No-till technology in the village should reach at least 100 hectares.

Farmers also proposed considering the purchase of awnless wheat varieties. Specialists emphasized that their suitability and drought resistance under local rainfed conditions should first be carefully assessed.

Stable No-till Areas in Karool

In Karool village, harvesting progressed more smoothly. Most farmers had already completed harvesting, with only one farm scheduled to finish the work the following week.

At the same time, the area cultivated using No-till technology has remained stable in the village over the past two years, at approximately 100 hectares.

The economic aspects of the technology were also discussed with farmers. Some farmers noted that No-till requires additional expenditure on mineral fertilizers compared with traditional practices, as they do not use fertilizers under their traditional approach.

At the same time, farmers acknowledged that yields under traditional cultivation without fertilizers are significantly lower than those achieved with No-till technology.

The monitoring therefore highlighted the need to continue awareness-raising activities among farmers and demonstrate, through practical examples, how appropriate agricultural practices and fertilizer application can influence yields and overall farm profitability.

Practical Support for Farmers

During the field monitoring, experts met and interviewed 9 farmers from Karool and Kashka-Terek villages in Uzgen District.

Such field monitoring visits provide an opportunity not only to assess the results of No-till technology, but also to identify practical challenges faced by farmers directly during production. The information collected helps determine further advisory support and develop recommendations for the next agricultural season.

Based on the monitoring results, it was recommended to urgently explore options for bringing harvesting machinery from neighbouring villages to Kashka-Terek, continue awareness-raising on the effective use of fertilizers, and assess the potential use of awnless and drought-resistant wheat varieties under local rainfed conditions.
